Have you ever stepped inside the Middle Littleton Tithe Barn? 🌾✨

Located just outside Evesham, this National Trust gem is one of the largest and finest medieval tithe barns in the country. Standing 130 feet long, its sheer scale is a massive reminder of the power held by the medieval abbeys.

📜 A Glimpse into History:

• Built for an Abbey: It was constructed in the 13th or 14th century (likely around 1250) for the monks of Evesham Abbey, which was once the third-largest abbey in England.
• What is a "Tithe"? The barn was used to store "tithes"—one-tenth of all local farm produce (like grain, hay, and even cider apples) given to the church as a tax.
• Master Craftsmanship: It’s built from local Blue Lias stone and Cotswold stone dressings, featuring a magnificent "raised cruck" timber roof held together by wooden pegs.

🕒 Plan Your Visit:

• Opening Times: The barn typically opens for the season from April 1st through to October 31st.
• Daily Hours: You can explore the barn daily between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
• Note: There is a small car park on-site, and dogs are welcome to join you for the visit!.

Have you ever taken a walk to the Leicester Tower in Evesham? 🌳🚶‍♂️

Standing tall on the wooded slopes above Worcester Road, this 50-foot octagonal folly offers a fascinating glimpse into British history. The commemorative plaque (pictured) tells the story of the man it honours:

📜 What the Plaque Tells Us:
• Built in 1842: The tower was erected in the year MDCCCXLII.
• A Hero's Memory: It is dedicated to Simon de Montfort, the Earl of Leicester.
• Political Pioneer: He is remembered as the "father and founder of the British House of Commons".
• The Final Battle: He was slain nearby at the Battle of Evesham in 1265 (MCCLXV).

You can reach it via a permissive path starting from the west end of The Squires.

Wassail! Good health to the trees (and to you!) 🍎

Ever wondered why people are dancing in orchards with cider and toast in the middle of January? You’re witnessing a Wassail—one of England's oldest and most eccentric winter traditions!

Derived from the Old Norse ves heill (meaning "be well" or "be in good health"), a Wassail is a ceremony held to wake the cider apple trees from their winter slumber and scare away evil spirits to ensure a bumper harvest for the coming year.

What to expect at a traditional Wassail:

🍞The Toast: A "Wassail Queen" places pieces of cider-soaked toast in the branches of the oldest tree as a gift to the spirits.

🥁The Noise: Expect lots of shouting, singing, and the banging of pots and pans (or even firing muskets!) to drive away any bad luck.

🍺The Drink: Sharing a bowl of warm, spiced cider or ale to toast to the health of the orchard.

If you want to experience this ancient custom for yourself, head to the iconic, timber-framed Fleece Inn at Bretforton—the perfect atmospheric backdrop for a winter's night!

• When: Saturday, 10th January
• Where: The Fleece Inn, Bretforton

Join the Pebworth Morris Men for an evening of traditional dance, song, and orchard antics. It’s loud, it’s lively, and it’s a true Worcestershire experience.
