Steve is a graduate of Cambridge and London Universities and is one of the foremost academics working in the field of the crusades and medieval warfare. He has been widely published, in many languages, by Yale, Oxford and Cambridge University Press.

His latest book, ‘Crusader Criminals – The Knights Who Went Rogue in the Holy Land‘, a wry look at the criminal underbelly of the crusades, is just out in paperback. It was the front cover and lead article in BBC History magazine as well as featuring in a number of high profile medieval podcasts.

Steve’s previous book, ‘Templars – The Knights Who Made Britain’, had a similarly high profile, and it too had the front cover and the lead article of BBC History when it appeared. Steve’s other recent books include ‘The Crusader Armies’, Yale 2018 and ‘The Crusader Strategy’, Yale 2020.  He is one of the major contributors to the forthcoming Cambridge History of the Crusades and the Oxford Illustrated History of the Crusades.

He is an Honorary Research Associate at Royal Holloway College, University of London.
